This is a tech article on repairing the broken mounting tabs on the 70-81 Camaro gauge bezel. I've tried several methods of repairing tabs, and this seems to be the all-time then far. With a little patience and only a few bucks, you tin repair tabs at dwelling house.

This is a typical gauge housing with all four mounting tabs broken. Only two of the tabs are shown hither.

Cut the vertical tab completely affluent with the horizontal portion of the tab. This will requite a sturdy mounting point for the new plastic to be put into place.

IMPORTANT - The approximate housing is made of ABS plastic. The new tabs should too be made of ABS plastic material. ABS bonds very well with super glues. I sometimes apply plastic cutting from spare guage housings. In this example, an ABS 4" pipe plug was used. Although products such as LEXAN (polycarbonate resin) are much stronger than ABS, information technology will non bond very well with ABS.

Cut a piece of ABS into small squares slightly larger than needed. Remove all the grit and exit a clean edge.

Make sure the mating surfaces of the gauge housing and the replacement tab are clean. Employ a quality super mucilage (I utilise LockTite Super Max) and spread liberally on both mounting surface. Utilise the new tab flush with the gauge housing horizontal tab mounting area.

CTabsGLUE.JPG

I use an aluminum duct tape to overlap the repair area. this will add a petty force and also give a make clean smoothen surface for the repair guides.

CTabsFOIL1.JPG

Repeat the process on all tabs to be repaired.

I have duplicated the exact size and shape of the mill tabs in a stick-on decal. I will mail info on how to get these decals at the finish of the article.

Use the decal flush with the bottom of the horizontal mounting surface. the decal is outlined in black to show where to cut and drill.

I use a bandsaw to rough cut the tabs, then use a dremel to round out the edges. Use a 3/16" drill flake to drill the mounting hole.
CTabsCUT1.JPG

After cut, there will be reinforcement tape left on both sides of the tab.

When finished, you will accept a strong mounting tab that should concluding for years to come up. Here is a pic of one of the tabs that was just repaired with a 3 lb hammer hanging from it.

If anyone is interested in getting the repair guide decals, please ship me a PM or an email.

For a limited time, I will provide these for only $2 per prepare for members here at NastyZ28. I simply ask that y'all provide me with a cocky addressed stamped envelope, and I ask that y'all only get them if you lot're seriously going to use them.

This is my small way of giving back to the customs.
Thanks!
Daniel
